I am a documentary filmmaker and independent story editor based in Haarlem, the Netherlands. I work with directors, editors and producers from first research to final cut, helping to shape complex material into films that are clear, layered and emotionally precise. My own documentaries have won at IDFA, the Berlinale and Visions du Réel, and as story editor I worked on House of Hope, winner of Best International Feature Documentary at Hot Docs 2026. I am drawn to documentaries that are intimate, cinematic and quietly political: films that trust real life, and still need rigorous storytelling to come fully alive.
About Astrid Bussink
Astrid Bussink is an internationally awarded documentary filmmaker, story editor and educator based in Haarlem, the Netherlands. As an independent documentary story editor, she works with filmmakers and producers from early research to final edit, helping shape complex material into clear, layered and emotionally precise films. Her story editing credits include House of Hope by Marjolein Busstra, winner of the Hot Docs Best International Feature Documentary Award and selected for IDFA 2025, as well as projects for Netflix, Videoland and NPO.
Her approach combines a filmmaker’s eye with a strong dramaturgical instinct: looking closely at structure, character, scene construction, point of view, tone and the delicate balance between what a film says and what it allows the audience to discover. She is especially interested in documentaries that are intimate, cinematic and quietly political, films that trust real life, but still need rigorous storytelling to fully come alive.
Alongside her work as a story editor, Astrid teaches documentary directing at the Netherlands Film Academy, lectures in Media Studies at the University of Amsterdam, and advises documentary and fiction projects for the NPO Fund. Her own films have screened at festivals including IDFA, Berlinale, Oberhausen, Visions du Réel and Cinekid, and have received awards such as the IDFA First Appearance Award, a Berlinale Generation Award, a Golden Calf and an IDFA Special Jury Award.
